Year-long exhibition Women in Focus explores the role of women in photography, from the subjects of images to producers. The captivating exhibition can be enjoyed in two parts:

Part 1 (Women Behind the Lens) celebrates the contribution made by women to photography throughout the years. The insightful display captures the first female pioneers of photography in Wales, Mary Dillywn and Thereza Mary Dillwyn Llewlyn. Visitors can also look forward to discovering the works of emerging contemporary practitioners such as Chloe Dewe Mathews, Bieke Depoorter and Clementine Schneidermann.

Part 2 (Women in Front of the Lens) explores a different angle, inviting visitors to observe the representation of women as photography subjects. The fascinating display covers everything from playful 19th century portraits to contemporary captures of the beauty of womanhood. This engaging part of the exhibition also intertwines a thought-provoking political narrative, poignant as ever in today’s climate.

Eisteddfod Chair and Crown

Set to be awarded to the winning poets in the literary competitions, the Eisteddfod Chair and Crown will be on showcased at National Museum Cardiff until 2nd August 2018. The dazzling display offers visitors the chance to take a closer look at the iconic objects leading up to the big event.

KIZUNA: Japan | Wales | Design

Japan is renowned for designs that shape the world we live in. Kizuna means the bonds of friendship in Japanese. This unique exhibition explores how Wales and Japan are interlinked in a fascinating story of international exchange.

Some of the most incredible pieces of art on display have never been seen in the UK before. This includes:

  • A 400 year old handscroll painted with monsters (a forerunner of modern animation)
  • Painted screens reaching over 1.6m high by 3.6m long, showcasing panoramic views of 18th century Edo
  • Beautiful and intricate costumes, ceramic jars and lacquer ware, celebrating the best of Japanese craft skills

Cerith Wyn Evans. Radiant Fold

Radiant Fold (…the Illuminating Gas) is a spectacular art installation by Cerith Wyn Evans. The installation makes reference to Marcel Duchamo’s The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Batchelors, Even 1915 – 23.

The neon forms showcase visual quotations from optical diagrams that Duchamp called ‘the occultist witness’. This striking display is complemented by the gallery’s architecture and history.

Lightbox: Cornelia Baltes is a must-see exhibition this year in Cardiff. You’ll find the colourful works of Cornelia Baltes on display at Chapter Arts Centre. Her work combines simplicity, playfulness and humour.

Creating abstract patterns and rhythms, her eye-catching work offers bold graphic qualities across walls and architecture. At Chapter, her work is displayed in the form of two giant cartoon hands emerging from the building.
