When Signature Living purchased the historic Coal Exchange building in Cardiff, it was entering a state of serve disrepair with many rooms and areas looking like they were past saving.
Signature Living started essential renovation work on the iconic welsh landmark in August 2016, and in just seven months’ integral parts of the building have been utterly transformed.
Built from 1883 to 1886 to the designs of James, Seward and Thomas the Coal Exchange served as a hub for business with prominent business leaders in coal and shipping coming together to make deals which spanned across the world. Previous to this, Cardiff was a small market town with a population of around 10,000. The significance of The Coal Exchange elevated Cardiff’s standing and it quickly became the centre of coal trade, on the world stage.
As well as becoming the centre of the coaling trade, the Exchange Building was also where the first million-pound business deal was made, again ensuring that it was put on the map and solidified its standing as a historical building.
On the 5th December, we held an open day to show how the development and restoration of the building had come on. Members of the local community came to explore this once derelict building, enjoying a taste of what would be when it opened fully.
Areas of the hotel which were open to the public included the entrance hall, Grand Bassey Hall and a few luxury bedrooms.
The history of this building is something which we believe to be integral to the DNA of the hotel and something which we really want to celebrate throughout.
Take a look at how far the development of this magnificent building is coming along and we’re really looking forward to unveiling the finished Exchange Hotel in summer 2017.
The Grand Bassey Hall has been utterly transformed into a remarkable events venue once again. Since its fall into disrepair, this momentous room lost its iconic graduate which radiated the moment you stepped through the doors. We wanted to bring the hall back to life, and ensure it was a venue celebrated. The Grand Bassey Hall will be the home of weddings, conferences and all other events with an expected capacity of around 250.
The hotel itself will feature 200 utterly luxury suites which will all be completed with Signature Living’s signature style of elegance and class. With whirlpool baths, luxury beds and ornate furnishings throughout, this will be a hotel stay you’ll treasure forever.
The Exchange Hotel will furthermore feature a tranquil spa, inviting restaurant & bar and many more exciting facilities.
