The Exchange Hotel welcomed its very first guests this weekend as we opened our doors for the official launch. Following the extensive renovation work that has restored the most iconic building in Cardiff to its former glory, an exciting day of events introduced the people of Cardiff to their newest luxury hotel.
Perseverance and Pace
Signature Living’s Lawrence Kenwright started the afternoon, telling the packed room about the hardships and triumphs that made the opening of The Exchange Hotel so special.
“We had a really tough time when we first came to Cardiff. Even though we are here today with rooms open, this amazing hall open and the reception area open, we’ve really only had planning permission for a couple of months. We’ve made quick strides in those months to get the building open.”
A number of rooms were opened as part of this first phase, with plans in place to ensure 60 are ready for the Champions League final, 90 to be ready in September and the full hotel to, ideally, be complete for service in January 2018.
On the day of the highly-anticipated opening, afternoon guests were welcomed into the stunning Grand Hall for the first taste of our Afternoon Tea, served up while beloved classic children’s book characters circulated the room. The first visitors to the reopened building were treated to Welsh Ham and Grain Mustard Croissants, Caerphilly Cheese and Pickle Brioche, as well as Cherry and Almond Battenberg and the classic afternoon tea staple of scones with jam and clotted cream.
As guests took their seats in the fantastically restored Grand Hall, each found an envelope with a ‘cheque’ inside, and once the excitement of afternoon tea subsided, an ‘auction’ began to win the prize in the auctioneer’s hand. The ‘winning bid’ was £1 million, a nod to the first ever £1 million cheque which was signed at The Exchange Hotel when it was The Coal Exchange.
The evening activities were equally as delightful, with Caerphilly Male Choir performing a carefully crafted set of classic songs. The oldest choir in Wales also treated the people of Cardiff to a rendition of the legendary Liverpool song You’ll Never Walk Alone.
A Journey to Success
Lawrence Kenwright described The Exchange Hotel as a ‘cantankerous old lady’, referring to the extensive renovation and structural issues which had to be overcome in order to get to where we are today. Signature Living has maintained the history and character of the Grade II listed building to make it the masterfully restored and beautifully preserved structure it deserves to be.
The building was in dire straits merely a few months ago, with tonnes of debris and speculation of an unstable framework. It was clear to see why the entire world thought there was no hope for the former hub of the world’s coal trade.
But Signature Living saw the same spark and potential that we saw in the once defunct 30 James Street – Home of The Titanic, and we took on the project with open arms, determined to make it a bustling business once more. Only this time by making it the most luxurious hotel that Cardiff has to offer.
Our opening weekend was a testament to the success of the restoration, showcasing the care taken in maintaining the heart and soul of the building. We preserved the historical furnishing and original aesthetics, and people were impressed with the love and care that went into making sure The Exchange Hotel was as glorious as it once was.
